Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has dropped out of the August 8 General Election race in which he was to defend his seat as an independent candidate.
Reports indicate that he withdrew from the race after meeting President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy William Ruto accompanied by other Jubilee leaders.
Mbugua will now campaign in support of Jubilee Party candidate Lee Kinyanjui who beat him in the April nominations.
The President, at the event for Jubilee Party aspirants in Nakuru County, welcomed the decision by Governor Mbugua to put aside his personal interest for the greater good of the Party.
Kenyatta urged all Jubilee nominees and supporters to forge a united front, saying it will guarantee the party’s victory in the August polls.
The move by the Governor to abandon the race boosts Mr Kinyanjui’s chances of winning the Nakuru gubernatorial seat in the coming General Election.
After losing to Kinyanjui in the primaries, the Governor accused the Jubilee officials of orchestrating irregularities that led to the loss.
He joined the Kenya Alliance of Independent Candidates (KAIC) which also includes among others, Kiambu Governor William Kabogo and Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Peter Kenneth.
The former Administration Police Commandant later declared that he would still be on the ballot paper come August.
