NASA Flag-bearer Raila Odinga Backtracks Previous Position on Independent Candidates

The National Super Alliance (NASA) flag bearer Raila Odinga has backtracked his position on independent candidates stating that he was not against them.

While in a meeting with a section of the independent candidates led by Nyatike Member of Parliament Omondi Anyanga, former Assistant Minister Ayiecho Olweny, Kisumu Women Rep Rose Nyamunga, former Principal Secretary Carey Orege and Richard Muga, Raila explained that he was not against Independents but was only  interested in seeing robust political parties and a strong parliamentary system.

“We must not kill the spirit of political parties in Kenya to build a firm political base for the presidency,” he stated.

Sources close to the former premier indicated that the move was meant to prevent a possible fall-out with the independents and added that there will be more meetings in the future.

Raila’s change of heart got opposition from some of his key lieutenants, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Director of Elections Junet Mohammed and Mbita legislator Millie Odhiambo stated that independents were enemies of the party and were breaking the law by using NASA logo and colours.

Last month, the Opposition Leader had announced that he did not recognise independents and asked ODM supporters to reject independents at the ballot arguing that the party needed numbers in Parliament.

“The independents need to campaign for themselves, they are on their own,” he stated.

His previous decision on Independent candidates elicited a lot of reactions with many pundits terming it as a grave mistake.

Political analyst and  Raila's ally Martin Oloo noted that the former Prime Minister had made a grave mistake in telling off independents.

“Raila needs everyone. He needs every single vote available if he is to win the elections and does not have the liberty to choose who he wants support from,” Oloo stated.

The Nyanza region attracted a lot of Independent candidates who defected from ODM after the nominations. Some of the top politicians who defected include;  former Energy Minister Ochilo Ayako, Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma, Legislators, Jakoyo Midiwo (Gem) Nicholas Gumbo (Rarieda) among others.
