Labour CS Phyllis Kandie Causes Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Leaders to Walk Out of Talks to End Nurses Strike

The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) officials have disrupted a crucial meeting meant to end the ongoing countrywide nurses' strike which is on its fourth day.

The leaders have stormed out of the Labour Ministry offices without reaching an agreement.

KNUN officials declined to take part in the talks after Labour Cabinet Secretary Phyllis Kandie failed to show up, despite being the one who called the meeting.

Prior to the meeting, the leaders demanded to discuss their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the government and not the trade dispute lodged by the Council of Governors.

The leaders led by Acting KNUN chairman Joseph Ngwasi described how the ministry had frustrated efforts to negotiate, citing unexplained delays as the main reason.

Ngwasi stated how they had waited for CS Kandie to arrive for over two hours, having waited since 10am.

According to the leaders, the representatives from the meeting told them that the CS had gone to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) which they found to be very disrespectful.

The Sarah Serem-led commission had thrown out the Sh40 billion CBA the nurses want signed and implemented.

The standoff has left the health sector in the country in total chaos with patients left unattended as doctors and clinicians are overwhelmed by the large number of patients seeking treatment.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero on Thursday threatened to sack all the striking nurses in the City during a senate hearing in Nairobi. He ordered a headcount of the nurses participating in the nationwide strike vowing to take action after a report on the same is submitted to him.
