A chaotic scene was witnessed on Monday morning after thousands of disgruntled youth took their anger to the streets pelting motorists with stones and blocking Ngong Road in Nairobi.
The youth, who had turned up for the City Askaris recruitment at the Dagoretti Training Center, were rioting after the exercise was cancelled without notice.
According to the agitated job seekers, this was the third time the recruitment targeting 600 recruits had been postponed.
They raised suspicions that those related to city hall officials had already been issued with calling letters.
Most of those who showed up for the recruitment were National Youth Service (NYS) graduates who were promised permanent jobs after they decorated the city ahead of former US President Barack Obama's visit to Kenya in 2015.
"We want our withheld certificates from NYS and also our dues for Obama beautification. We were promised these jobs since 2015, we are yet to be employed," one youth lamented.
Another youth claimed that he had applied to join the City Traffic Marshall Brigade in 2016 and was part of the shortlisted candidates who participated in a 10-kilometre run but were never employed.
Anti-riot police officers who arrived at the scene were able to dispatch the rowdy group.
