High Court Orders IEBC to Receive Papers of Independent Presidential Candidate Peter Solomon Gichira

The High Court has ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to receive presidential aspirant Peter Solomon Gichira's.

High Court judge Justice George Odunga also directed the electoral body to review the papers and give Gichira feedback on the status of his candidature within 36 hours.

Gichira was disqualified from the race by the electoral body for allegedly failing to meet the time lines set by IEBC on when to present his papers.

The court established that the commission did not communicate to the aspirant when to present his papers as no evidence was presented to confirm this.

Mr Gichira had been arrested and locked up on May 27 after he allegedly attempted to commit suicide after IEBC rejected his papers.

Witnesses disclosed that the aspirant turned violent after he failed to meet IEBC commissioners. He then opened a window on the 6th floor of the building with the intention of jumping out before security guards grabbed him.

He was arraigned in court on May 30 and charged with attempting suicide, creating disturbance and malicious damage to property.

Gichira denied the charges and was released on Sh200,000 cash bail or a bond of Sh200,000.
