Kenyan Brothers Who Were Politicians and Served In Parliament At the Same Time

Kenya's political scene has been dominated by influential political families - the Kenyattas, the Mois and the Odingas. Siblings have rivalled and supported each other to run for different elective seats.

Over time we have had brothers serving in the same parliament.

Here is the list...

1. Raila Odinga and Oburu Odinga

Arguably the most influential politician in Kenya for over 20 years, Raila Odinga has been in the limelight since Kenya got multi-party democracy. He has been the MP for Lang’ata from 1992 to 2013.

His Brother Oburu Odinga served as the MP for Bondo constituency from a 1995 by-election following the death of Oginga Odinga and served till 2007.

The two brothers served together in Parliament for a record 12 years.

2. Gideon Moi and Raymond Moi

The election of the two sons of Kenya’s 2nd president proved that the dominance of former President Daniel Moi in the Rift Valley region is strong. Both are carrying on their father’s legacy by making sure that the KANU party does not die. They both got elected on the KANU ticket during the 2013 elections.

Gideon Moi succeeded his father as the MP for Baringo Central and later elevated himself to become the first senator of Baringo County.

Raymond Moi as well prospered as the MP for Rongai constituency.

3.Moses Wetangula and Timothy Wanyonyi

Senate minority leader Moses Wetang’ula was elected as the Senator for Bungoma in the 2013 General Election on a Ford Kenya ticket, while his brother Timothy Wanyonyi who was running on an ODM ticket won the Westlands Parliamentary seat.

Moses is vocal in the Senate and is a staunch opposer of the Jubilee government. He is one of the NASA principals while Timothy has maintained his loyalty to the Opposition.

4. Otieno Kajwang’ and Tom Joseph Kajwang’

Otieno Kajwang’ was elected Homabay Senator whereas Tom Kajwang’ took the Ruaraka parliamentary seat in 2013. Otieno, unfortunately, passed away in 2014 but was succeeded by his younger brother Moses Ojwang’.

5. Stephen Ole Ntutu and Patrick Ntutu

Stephen was elected the Narok County Senator while the younger Patrick clinched the Narok West MP seat during the 2013 elections.

Of the two brothers, Patrick is the more outspoken and is well known in and out of parliament. He will be running for Narok Governorship while his brother seeks to maintain his seat.

6. Joseph Nyaga and Norman Nyaga

Nyaga served as the Gachoka Member of Parliament for one term before his older brother Joseph Nyaga won the seat on a KANU ticket in the 1997 elections. Norman, however, ran for the Kamukunji seat on a DP ticket during the same elections and won.

The two later defended their respective seats during the 2002 elections under the euphoric NARC coalition.

The political winds shifted against them in 2007 when they were both voted out.

Julius Sunkuli and Andrew Sunkuli

This is the pair that never was. Their sibling rivalry got the better of them and they ended up handing over the senatorial seat to their rival, Stephen Ole Ntutu, during the 2013 elections.

These brothers spoilt it for each other going for the same seat. Their father has blessed Julius who is elder to run for the seat but Andrew defied his father and ran because he believed the youth wanted him to vie.
