2016 KCPE Candidate Drowns in Migori

A top performer in the 2016 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam has passed on.

Erick Juma, who scored 418 marks and was expected to join a national school, drowned on Thursday in River Migori during a camping session.

The KCPE graduate had attended the Western Kenya Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Youth Camporee at Lichota area where he was unfortunately overwhelmed by the high waters.

Suna West Deputy County Commissioner Yusuh Huka confirmed the incident stating that his team had been unable to retrieve the body.

He was, therefore, forced to seek the intervention of Kenya Red Cross officers with a search operation going on for the better part of Friday.

On the same night, another youth participating in the same event died in what was suspected to be an asthma attack.

The administrator assured that he would take action against organisers of the event, which is being attended by close to 2000 youth, for lack of adequate security measures.

Juma was participating in the fun event a week after receiving the good news of his exemplary performance following announcement of the results by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi.

He was among more than 5000 candidates who hit the 400 and above mark with the CS assuring that they would get a call-up to a national school of their choice.
