Residents Block Roads as They Protest Preparations for President Uhuru Kenyatta's Visit

It was not business as usual in Murang'a on Tuesday as the County Government put in place final touches to host President Uhuru Kenyatta today.

Residents took to the streets in protests, blocking roads and bringing business to a standstill for the better part of the morning.

They accused the County Government of only repairing roads when the president is set to visit the area.

One of the protesters said that by filling the potholes, the president would assume that local leaders are doing their job to ensure the roads are in good condition and would not know the misery they go through on a daily basis.

Another protestor disclosed that the poor state of the road is a great risk to pedestrians as vehicles using the road constantly avoid potholes and come close to pedestrians - something that could result in accidents.

The residents blocked roads and gave the police a hard time as they blamed the officials for providing temporary solutions whenever a high profile government official is visiting the area.

Police resorted to calling in National Youth Service personnel to help clear the road that had been barricaded with stones.

Last month, sections of the road were allegedly filled with murram ahead of a visit by the Deputy President (DP) but soon after the visit, all repairs stopped.

The protestors alleged that the DP ordered repairs for the road last year but one year down the line, nothing has been done and the road is still in a sorry state.

The protests were planned to coincide with Uhuru' visit to Muranga that was scheduled to take place yesterday.

His visit was however postponed to give him time to tour other areas to campaign for his re-election.
