Case Filed for IEBC to Conduct August General Election Using Queue System Of Voting

With about 40 days to the August General Election, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) could be compelled to adopt the queue system of voting popularly known as mlolongo.

A 43-year old Nairobi voter has moved to court seeking to have the upcoming elections conducted through the queue system.

In court papers before the court, Anthony Chege Njoroge wants the ballot papers printing tender award to Al Ghurair cancelled and Kenyans left to elect their President by queuing.

Njoroge wants to be enjoined in the case filed by the National Super Alliance (NASA) against the IEBC and the Dubai-based company challenging the tendering process.

He cited that the queue system was significantly cheaper, simple and less time-consuming as compared to the ballot process.

“By adopting the Mlolongo system, Kenya will spend only Sh100,000 to conduct a successful presidential election compared to the Sh2.5 billion in contention,” Njoroge argues.

Through his lawyer Kimandu Gichohi, he said he is not only against the tender being to Al Ghurair but also any attempts of re-tendering to another firm.

He believes that going back to the queue system would settle the ballot tender debacle. The case will be heard on Tuesday.
