Sigiri Bridge and Other Jubilee Projects that Suffered Challenges After Being Launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta

The Jubilee administration has implemented various projects across the country which have been launched in colourful ceremonies attended by the head of state, his deputy or other leading government officials.

These five projects, however, did not serve the purposes they were intended as they collapsed or faced challenges soon afterwards.

Collapsed Sigiri Bridge in Budalangi.

The Sigiri bridge, which is set to cost taxpayers Sh1.2 Billion, according to the government, was inspected by President Uhuru Kenyatta barely two weeks ago and he promised it would be launched in July.

However, even before it could be used, the bridge collapsed yesterday with a section of Opposition supporters claiming that it was hurriedly done to be launched by the president ahead of the coming elections.

National Youth Services (NYS)

Under the leadership of former Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, the National Youth Service (NYS) embarked on an ambitious slum upgrading project that transformed the face of Kenya's slums and offered meaningful employment to the youth.

However, the infamous NYS scandal that saw the public lose close to 1 Billion shillings in corruption was a total embarrassment to what the program had achieved.

Sinking Bamburi Road

Barely six months after the Bamburi Road was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta, sections of the road were washed away by rainwater with some sections reported to be sinking.

Residents, led by Shanzu MCA aspirant Martin Wekesa blamed the president for launching bogus projects.

Mtongwe Ferry Services-Likoni

In March, the head of state launched Mtongwe Ferry services in a ceremony that Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho was barred from attending.

Less than two months later, a section of the pontoon was washed into the ocean by waves, disrupting ferry services and leaving commuters stranded.

Title deeds

The land issue at the Coast is a concern to many. The president was keen in addressing the issue and issued Title Deeds to a section of the residents.

However, soon afterwards, media reports indicated that the title deeds were cancelled by the National Lands Commission after it emerged that they were irregularly issued.
