Government to Take Over Former VP Moody Awori's House in Kisumu

It was a sad day in court for former Vice President (VP) Moody Awori as he lost a five-year-old court battle that saw him lose a multimillion property located in Kisumu City.

The property in question is the house identified as Municipality/Block 11/136 that was acquired by the former VP in 1998 in unclear circumstances.

The government will now take over the ownership of the house after the court established that the former VP illegally acquired it without following the law.

When making the ruling, Justice Stephen Kibunja of the High Court stated that "there is no evidence to show that the house was acquired through the laid down procedure."

The court also established that Awori had no valid reason, document or proof to lay claim to the house whose ownership he had been claiming.

Awori, who once served as the Funyula legislator, went to court in 2012 after government officials from the Ministry of Housing ordered him to hand over the house.

Government officials also demanded documents relating to the property which the former VP failed to hand over and instead went to court to pursue the matter.

In his submission, the Auditor General faulted Awori for failing to produce the documents for audit purposes when he was requested to do so.

The former VP suffered yet another blow after his demand for Sh2 Million was dismissed by the judge.

He had demanded the money on claims that his rights had been infringed but the court determined that this was not the case.
