Independent Presidential Candidate Solomon Gichira wants IEBC to Call Off the General Election

Presidential candidate Solomon Gichira on Tuesday called for the immediate cancellation of the General Election set for August 8th, 2017.

Speaking in Nairobi, the Presidential candidate accused IEBC of overseeing an unconstitutional electoral process and asked that Senior officials including IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba to resign and a new team be formed to prepare for “proper” elections in two years.

According to Mr Gichira IEBC had manipulated the electoral process in favour of some pre-determined winners.

“We are not sure if there is anything left to go wrong in the preparation of this year’s election preparation process because everything that has been done is wrong," he stated.

Mr Gichira further noted that the Commission had been acting unconstitutionally and in bad faith by “stubbornly printing some ballot papers while battling suits that are challenging the same printing in court”.

His running mate Mr Kelly Watima on his part called for a constitutional referendum that will completely separate registration of voters, management of voter register and management of voter registration.

“The referee has no good faith and putting the country at a very dangerous place. IEBC should be stripped off some of its functions,” he mentioned.

The duo also demanded that IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati be arrested on claims that he disobeyed court orders.

“We are also calling for the jailing of Mr Chebukati for disobeying court orders directing the IEBC to accept our nomination papers,” Mr Gichira stated adding that he had already filed a contempt of court case against Chebukati.

Mr Gichira is seeking to be the country's next President and will face off with incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta, Opposition Leader Raila Odinga and 5 other candidates.
