Pilot of Plane That Crashed in Kibera Ignored Warnings

Details from the control tower at Wilson Airport have indicated that the pilot of the light aircraft that crashed on Wednesday near the southern bypass in Nairobi, ignored warnings that he was flying too low.

Peter Kamau, an air traffic controller, is reported to have asked the pilot why he was flying very low and he answered: "everything is okay".

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the plane looked unstable and even came into contact with power lines before flipping and hitting trees.

The Cessna 206 crashed at Lifespring Christian Academy, missing a dormitory block by a few meters.

The plane was carrying Royal Media Services (RMS) journalists; Mauritius Odour, Sam Ogina and Joseph Njane who were going to cover a National Super Alliance (NASA) rally in Kabarnet but they all survived after being helped out of the wreckage.

Lang'ata sub-county commissioner Philip Lemalasia led a team of experts to the scene and sealed off the school moments after the crash.

"I believe the pilot was trying to avoid hitting buildings at the school. If it had hit them...we would be talking of many casualties," he said.

NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga in a statement appreciated the efforts of journalists and sacrifices they make to cover events, expressing his relief that there were no major casualties during the crash.

"This tragedy reminds us of the sacrifices journalists make daily in their quest to keep our citizens informed, an effort we sometimes take for granted until an incident like today's happens.

"We thank God for their lives and we assure the reporters, the Kenyan media fraternity and the Royal Media family in particular that our thoughts and prayers are with them," stated Odinga.
