Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa has stated that the recent Al Shabaab attacks in Lamu are politically instigated and are targeting strongholds of the Jubilee Party.
Speaking to journalists in Lamu town over the weekend, Marwa implicated some politicians in the region, saying they were behind the attacks that led to the shooting of Public Works Principal Secretary Mariam El Maawy.
“The PS is a resident of Lamu, a woman and a Muslim for that matter. They targeted her because she is a government officer and maybe because she is aligned with a certain political party.
“They do it in a manner that appears as if they are terrorists but we know of politicians who are providing funding so that residents, security officers and even government officials are killed.
“They want to instil fear by creating insecurity so people can’t vote but we want to let them know that people will vote and will do so in large numbers too,” said Mr Marwa.
During the incident, five occupants of the vehicle including Ms El Maawy’s nephew Arif Kassim Athman were killed while the PS was seriously injured.
For the past two weeks, over 30 people including security officers have been killed by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in various parts of Lamu.
Marwa added that the terror incidents in Poromoko, Pandanguo, Jima and at Milihoi were political strategies by those who plan to scare voters from participating in the General Election.
He issued a shoot-to-kill order for any terrorist spotted anywhere in the county.
