President Uhuru Kenyatta to Organize Town Hall Meeting in Place of Presidential Debate

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto are reportedly examining other alternatives to engage Kenyans after they announced that they would not participate in the 2017 Presidential debate.

Sources close to the President disclosed to The Star that the President and his deputy were planning to organise a town hall meeting where they would directly engage with Kenyans before concluding their campaigns.

"The President is not interested in a competition of words with his competitors. He wants to answer questions directly like he did at the Jubilee Party manifesto launch," the source stated.

According to the daily, the meeting will take place for three hours where President Kenyatta and DP Ruto will answer questions from the audience.

"Other than the questions from the audience, the two Jubilee chiefs will also take questions to be sent through SMS platforms and others sent via social media platforms," the report read in part.

The Head of State is said to have resorted to a town hall meeting as he needed more time to explain his achievements and policies to Kenyans one on one.

The date and venue of the town hall meeting are, however, yet to be confirmed.

President Kenyatta and DP Ruto were invited to take part in the televised debates but rejected the invite stating that they had not been consulted on the debate formats.

The Head of State was set to square it out with Opposition Leader Raila Odinga on Monday, July 24th, 2017 whereas DP Ruto did not show up for his debate held on Monday, July 17.
