Raila Odinga Wins With 47 Percent Against Uhuru Kenyatta's 46 in Zogby Poll

National Super Alliance (NASA) Raila Odinga has for the first time led in the presidential race in an opinion poll released 20 days to the August General Election.

According to the poll, if elections were held today, Odinga would emerge the winner with 47.4 percent of the votes in his favour.

He would be closely followed by President Uhuru Kenyatta who is seeking re-election on a Jubilee ticket with 46.7 percent of the participants backing him.

The survey was conducted between July 8 and 13 by a United States pollster John Zogby and had been commissioned by NASA.

The pollster indicated that among the issues which were highlighted by respondents included the corruption cases reported under the Jubilee regime and the worsening state of economy.

A large percentage of the sampled population blamed corruption for the high cost of living, unemployment and lack of basic foodstuffs.

As per the poll conducted in all the 47 counties, 42 percent of the respondents think the country is heading in the wrong direction with most being wary of corruption and unemployment.

On the accuracy of the results, Zogby assured that the survey was authentic since he had been involved in similar projects in various African countries.

The most recent opinion poll by research firm Infotrak had revealed that Kenyatta's lead was getting narrower while the Opposition chief was gaining ground.

The poll indicated that President Kenyatta would win by 48 percent against Odinga's 43 percent.

Jubilee Party emerged the most preferred coalition in the study with 47 percent as compared to NASA which had 43 percent.
