Renowned reggae and dancehall hypeman MC Fullstop, whose real name was John Maina, has died after a long battle with tuberculosis.
The beloved member of the reggae fraternity passed away on Friday, August 1. He was known for his distinctive voice and raw energy in the entertainment industry, with a career spanning nearly three decades, beginning in the early 1990s.
The celebrated MC gained fame for his reggae mixes, which were especially popular in the 2000s, becoming a constant feature in entertainment joints and on music players.
A prominent figure in Kenya’s reggae and dancehall scene, he toured East Africa and hosted numerous events.
Beyond live performances, he also served as a media personality, co-hosting popular shows such as Riddim Vybz on K24 TV and Reggae Boyz on NRG Radio.
Sadly, MC Fullstop had been battling a severe illness for several years. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis (TB) in 2021, which led to the complete collapse of his left lung.
The host further explained that, unlike the liver, which can regenerate itself, the lungs cannot heal on their own. He confirmed plans to readjust his lifestyle to live with one lung.
In 2022, he faced another setback when TB affected his throat, severely impairing his ability to speak, walk, and run. He had expressed his intention to retire from the entertainment industry due to his deteriorating health.
Despite undergoing various treatments and receiving immense support from fans and fellow entertainers, MC Fullstop passed away, with his long-standing TB illness believed to be the cause of his demise.
His death has deeply saddened reggae fans and the wider entertainment community in Kenya, with famous media personalities and reggae fans alike sending their condolence messages.
“We mourn the loss of a true Kenyan legend today. Mc Fullstop,” stated radio presenter Maina Kageni.
“RIP to the greatest MC Kenya has ever seen,” said media personality and MC Azeezah Hashim.
“RIP MC Full Stop, the microphone maestro. We shall really miss you,” noted ODM Communications Director Phillip Etale.
