Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i Appoints Prof Mwenda Ntarangwi as New Commission for University Education Chairperson

Education Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i on Thursday appointed Prof Mwenda Ntarangwi to be the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Commission for University Education (CUE).

The CS, in a letter dated 17th July 2017, stated that the appointment would commence as from Tuesday, 5th September 2017 and expressed optimism that the Prof would revolutionise the University education in the country.

“Your appointment comes at a time when the university education sector is going through a series of reflection and reforms. I wish you the very best as you take this post.

“I look forward to working with you as you steer the university regulatory framework to greater heights, with an eye on the highest quality, efficiency, effective leadership and management in the university education sector,” Matang'i's letter read in part.

Prof Ntarangwi will take over from outgoing Chairperson Prof David Some who is set to retire on Monday, September 4th, 2017.

His appointment will see him serve for a period of five years until September 2022.

Prior to his appointment, he has been serving as an Associate Professor of anthropology at Calvin College in Michigan.

Prof Ntarangwi was appointed after being successful in interviews that were held on July 12th and 13th 2017.

Other academicians who had expressed interest for the position include; former Egerton University Vice-chancellor James Tuitoek, acting chief executive officer Walter Oyawa, Prof Anne Nangulu who is Deputy CEO in charge of quality, audit and standards at the commission, Prof Nathan Ogechi, Deputy Vice-chancellor in charge of student’s affairs at Moi University, Prof Christopher Shisanya and Kenyatta University Deputy Vice-chancellor (Administration) Prof John Okumu.

The Commission is charged with the mandate to regulate and oversee university education in the country.
