St. Augustine Preparatory School Headmistress Serah Kendi to Face Murder Charges

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has recommended that the headmistress of St. Augustine Preparatory school in Mombasa, where one of the pupils was crushed to death by the school bus, be arrested and face murder charges.

Ms. Sarah Kessi is set to be charged with murder following the Friday morning incident that led to the tragic death of six-year-old Jeremy Masila.

Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Alexander Muteti directed the Mombasa criminal investigations officer to lead investigations into the matter and apprehend all those responsible.

"We have reviewed the investigation file and directed the immediate arrest of the school principal, the bursar, bus driver, the school mechanic and the bus driver's helper who was on board,” Muteti stated adding that he would personally move to court on Monday.

The school will be charged with negligence as initial investigations showed that it was aware of the condition of the bus as the hole where the boy fell through had been covered with a carton box.

The 6-year old was crushed to death after he sank through a hole left open in the bus, ferrying pupils without seat belts, rusted floor and delicate to withstand heavy weight.

His sister, who is in Standard Two at the same school, was on the bus when the incident happened.

The bus driver and his assistant escaped after the incident.
