Police Investigate Shooting of Female Student Ann Wairimu During Wizkid's Nairobi Concert

Police are investigating the shooting of a female university student during a concert organised for Nigerian musician Wizkid at the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC) over the weekend.

Ms Ann Wairimu, 23, was injured during a tussle that took place between a police officer wielding an AK-47 and the driver who had come to pick Ms Wairimu.

The police statement indicates that the driver grabbed the officer's weapon during an altercation over parking space.

The accused officer maintained that the driver refused to move his car as instructed before proceeding to grab the gun's nozzle and extending his hand to the trigger, leading to the shooting.

The driver, however, denied the officer's claims and accused the policemen of having shot at them unprovoked.

He added that the police officer approached the car as he had stepped out and was ready to leave with Ms Wairimu on the passenger's seat had the cop not stopped him.

Witnesses managed to capture a video of the police officer as he was fleeing the scene of the crime and they confronted him, agitating that he accompany them to the police station to record a statement.

In the video, the officer is seen trying to cover his face to hide his identity and later heard issuing a threat to the citizens recording the video.

The citizen who filmed the officer was arrested and accused of having incited the public against the law enforcement officer.

Central Head of DCI Seroney Kiberenge conveyed that investigations are ongoing to establish the facts before taking action.

"It is true someone was shot and we are on the case to know the circumstances," Kiberenge confirmed.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) invited witnesses to come forward and record their statements to aid in the investigations.

"IPOA calls upon witnesses to an alleged shooting incident where a police officer was caught on video walking away after shooting," the body stated in a Tweet.

Ms Wairimu is still in hospital undergoing treatment for a bullet wound on her hand and a fractured thigh. Doctors have confirmed that she is in stable condition.
