High Court Temporarily Suspends IEBC's Decision to Fine Governor Moses Akaranga

High Court Judge George Odunga has temporarily suspended an IEBC decision to fine Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga Sh500,000.

Governor Akaranga had been penalised by IEBC for breaching the electoral code of conduct.

The Vihiga County boss got into trouble for using Opposition Leader Raila Odinga's portrait in his campaign material yet he is not a member of the National Super Alliance (NASA).

“By his own admission, the accused has been using National Super Alliance (NASA) colors and symbols as well as portraits of the coalition’s leaders in his posters and billboards.

"It is, therefore, in breach of the code of conduct for the accused to try to associate himself with the coalition,” IEBC's Code of Conduct Committee had earlier ruled.

Akaranga is contesting under his Progressive Party of Kenya which is not a member of NASA.

The IEBC committee has also fined a number of leaders for electoral misconduct.

Some of the leaders fined include Kasarani MP John Njoroge and Makadara Parliamentary aspirant Robert Momanyi who were each fined Sh 250,000 for using symbols and portrait of President Uhuru Kenyatta despite them being independent candidates.
