NASA Files Case Seeking Orders Barring Police and Military from Directly Engaging in Elections

The National Super Alliance (NASA) has filed a new case regarding the upcoming August elections.

In the case, NASA is seeking orders blocking the military and security agencies from being involved directly in the elections on grounds that the move would scare away voters.

The alliance is also challenging the deployment of KDF officers to areas listed as violence hot spots, citing lack of parliamentary approval.

NASA leaders led by Raila Odinga have in the past few weeks accused the Government of planning to rig elections by using the military and police.

Last week Mr Odinga Released a list of 42 police officers who he alleged had been recruited to ensure the current administration retains power regardless of the outcome of next month's General Election.

The NASA flag bearer noted that the 42 officers were drawn from the General Service Unit, Kenya Airport Police Unit, Dog Unit and traffic unit.

According to Mr Odinga, the team was to be issued with civilian identity cards as a camouflage after which they would be hired by IEBC as polling clerks and returning officers while some will be Jubilee Party agents.

“The officers have been assigned what the Kenya Police Service calls ‘special duties’ via a circular dated June 23. “They have been issued with clearance certificates and asked to report to headquarters to be issued with discharge certificates before the 2nd of July," Odinga stated.
