SGR to Suspend Operations on Election Day

Kenya Railways has announced that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Madaraka Express Train will suspend its services on August 8.

The train will halt operations to allow SGR staff and other service providers to vote.

“We shall have the first scheduled interruption on the service on August 8, 2017, due to the national elections,” Kenya Railway Managing Director Atanas Maina stated.

“It is imperative that staff and service providers of the Madaraka Express exercise their democratic voting rights.”

SGR was launched on May 31 by President Uhuru Kenyatta who rode on the train's maiden trip.

Madaraka Express trains depart at 9 am daily for a four-and-a-half hour ride between Nairobi and Mombasa.

The train can accommodate 1200 passengers per trip.

The August 8 poll, which is just 11 days away, will have 16,259 candidates competing for 1,882 elective positions.
