Government Increases Police Officers and Teachers' Salaries Starting July 2017

The government has increased the salaries of all police officers and teachers in a move that comes 10 days to the General Election.

According to a statement from the National Police Service Commission (NPSC), all officers are set to receive an interim minimum revised salary.

As per the new plan, the lowest paid officer (Constable) will get a 19 percent pay rise with those in the rank of a Senior Assistant Inspector General being awarded a six percent increase.

The increment shall be reflected in the pay packages for officers in all ranks starting from the constable to Senior Assistant Inspector General effective from July 2017.

The Commission stated that further consultations on the award of a comprehensively revised pay structure for all officers were still ongoing.

At the same time, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the release of salaries inclusive of an increase agreed upon in 2016.

TSC's head of communications Kamotho Kihumba stated that this was in line with the signed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed between the teachers' unions and the Commission.

He added that the pay slips had already been prepared and the money would be available from Saturday.

The rise is set to affect members of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).

“The payroll has been run and pay slips uploaded on the online platform for access by teachers. In addition to the new salary structure, teachers will continue drawing all the applicable allowances,” stated Kihumba.
