Government Assures SGR of Adequate Security

Kenya Railways (KR) has retracted its earlier statement suspending the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) operations until further notice.

KR Managing Director Atanas Maina stated that the government had taken additional security measures to ensure the safety of both passengers and operations across the country.

"We will resume all services on both the Madaraka Express and the Nairobi commuter rail service," Maina stated.

Earlier on, Mr Maina had stated that Kenya Railways had made a decision to halt SGR operations due to the current political dynamics in the country

“All tickets issued will be refunded or rescheduled to other travel dates when service resumes,” Maina highlighted.

Madaraka Express services had been suspended on Tuesday, August 8 to allow SGR staff and other service providers to vote.

The trains depart at 9 am daily for a four-and-a-half hour ride between Nairobi and Mombasa.

The train can accommodate 1200 passengers per trip.
