Controversial Preacher Gilbert Deya Denied Bail

The High Court in Nairobi has denied controversial preacher Gilbert Deya bail.

In a ruling issued on Friday, the court ruled that Deya should remain in custody as the hearing of his case continues.

The court also stated that the case would be heard on a daily basis and asked the prosecution to be ready always.

On Thursday, Deya appeared in court and complained of the poor conditions he had been subjected to at Kamiti Prison where he is being detained.

Through his lawyer, Mr John Swanka, Deya branded the cells as pathetic and not fit for human habitation.

The preacher protested not being allowed to leave his cell from 7 pm until the next morning as well as having to use a bucket as a toilet.

"Because there are no washrooms, he has to use a bucket and keep it in his room till morning. He is made to wash the bucket with his bare hands.

"The single room cell is extremely dirty and the mattress has bugs which have been biting my client since August 4," the lawyer decried.

The lawyer outlined that the terms agreed between Britain and Kenya before his deportation provided that, should Deya be remanded, the preacher would be housed in the special unit at the prison.

The self-proclaimed bishop of a church in Peckham in South London is accused of stealing babies and lying to barren couples that he could give them 'miracle babies'.

He is alleged to have stolen five babies in Kenya between 1999 and 2004.
