Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko Rejects Sh25 Million for Inauguration Ceremony

Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko has rejected Sh25 Million that was set aside for his inauguration ceremony.

Sonko, who beat incumbent Evans Kidero with over 800,000 votes, directed that the money be used to pay county government workers' arrears.

The incoming Governor ordered county Chief Finance Officer Luke Gatimu to use the money to offset the one-month arrears owed to workers within 48 hours.

He was speaking after meeting Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) officials who planned to down their tools over the unpaid dues.

The Assumption of Office Committee had set aside the Sh25 Million for the mega ceremony which would go to the fueling of VIP cars, security, documentation among others services.

He also urged the City residents to remain calm and disregard a call by the National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga to boycott work.

In the previous administration, the county staff on several occasions threatened to go on strike over delayed salaries.

In July, the workers protested after the county government delayed the June salary for more than two weeks.

At the time, the government blamed the Controller of Budget and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for the slow processing of the salaries.
