US Government Congratulates President Uhuru Kenyatta on His Re-election

US President Donald Trump has welcomed a report by international observers on the just concluded Kenyan election that was highly opposed by Opposition Leader Raila Odinga and his team in the National Super Alliance (NASA).

In a statement, the White House Press Office commended Kenyans for successfully concluding Tuesday’s General Election and upholding peace throughout the electioneering period.

The White House also upheld a report by international domestic observers giving the elections a thumbs up.

“We commend the dedication of candidates, officials, and the public to upholding a peaceful, fair, and transparent contest, and we welcome the statements by international and domestic observer missions affirming the credibility of the election,” the statement read in part.

The White House urged all politicians who felt aggrieved with the outcome of the elections to seek legal redress and help stop the ongoing violent demonstrations in parts of the country.

“We are troubled by reports that some demonstrations have turned violent, and call on all Kenyans to reject violence and resolve disputes in accordance with the Kenyan Constitution and the rule of law," the statement read in part.

The Opposition team led by Raila has previously maintained that they would not go to the courts to challenge the outcome of the elections.

President Trump's government also congratulated President Uhuru Kenyatta on his re-election and promised to continue supporting Kenya in all her endeavours.

“The United States will continue to partner with Kenya to secure a prosperous and peaceful future for both of our great nations,” the US government stated.

In regards to President Kenyatta's call for peace and unity, the White House noted that it was important for the Head of State to work towards building a prosperous nation, adding that all citizens needed to be actively involved in government operations.

“This historic election is an important step forward, and we urge all Kenyans to unite in peace to continue building their country,” the White House mentioned.

The US government made the remarks amidst accusations by Raila and the Opposition that the observers failed in their mission.

Mr Odinga, while speaking to CNN on Friday, noted that the observers concentrated on voting and tallying but not the transmission of the results.

“The observers were more concerned with cosmetic aspects. I think the observers have not helped Kenyans resolve this dispute, they have confounded it by giving basically an approval to a fairly flawed process.

"I am very disappointed with John Kerry and the other team of observers,” he stated.
