Six people have been confirmed dead after a tragic fire broke out and burned them as they were sleeping in Matanya village, Laikipia County.
Laikipia area OCPD Ben Changulo confirmed the incident stating a woman and her three children were among the fatalities and that a probe was underway to establish the cause of the fire.
"We are surprised by this incident and we are still investigating the cause of the fire. The wooden houses are not connected to electricity," the OCPD told Standard Digital.
The residents, on their part, noted that they heard cries and wails from the victims only to wake up and find the houses on fire, adding that attempts to rescue them were unsuccessful as they had already been burnt to death.
“We found the bodies of the four in their bedroom and their house had been burnt down. They were sleeping in the same bedroom," one of the residents stated.
Laikipia governor- elect Ndiritu Muriithi visited the area and condoled with the family promising that they would be assisted in the funeral arrangements.
"This is a sad day for the people of Laikipia. We will do everything possible to help the families," he stated.
The bodies were moved to Nanyuki County Referral Hospital mortuary.
