Judiciary Issues Guidelines to Journalists on Election Petitions Coverage

The Judiciary has issued 6 demands to journalists wishing to cover election petitions after the August polls.

The Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Ms Anne Amadi has issued guidelines on how the media should conduct themselves during the hearings of the election petitions.

1. Arrival time for the court sessions

Media personnel will be expected to be seated in court 15 minutes before the proceedings commence.

2. No distractions when court is in session

The media representatives are forbidden from causing distractions in court by installing, moving or removing their equipment while proceedings are ongoing.

3. No photography allowed

Photographers will not be permitted to take pictures at the beginning and at the end of court proceedings.

4. Soft lighting

Journalists are advised to use soft lighting that does not generate heat or glaring effects.

5. No unflattering pictures

Media houses are warned against using images that show judicial officers, litigants, advocates or the public in an undignified manner.

6. No selling of footage

The guidelines further direct that the footage from the court proceedings should not be used for political or commercial purposes.

One of the major election petitions will be at the Supreme Court where the National Super Alliance (NASA) will be challenging IEBC's decision to declare Uhuru Kenyatta winner of the 2017 Presidential election.
