IEBC Publishes Names of 7 Election Losers in Gazette Notice

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is under fire after it published the names of seven election losers in a special gazette notice released yesterday.

Residents of Bungoma were left disappointed after the names of the winners declared by the IEBC missed out in the publication.

Individuals whose names were published by IEBC as the MCAs in both Webuye East and West Constituencies lost in the concluded General Election.

In Webuye East Constituency, Wekesa Simiyu was listed as the area MCA-elect whereas Ali Mutoka had been declared the winner by the electoral commission.

Martin Wanyonyi emerged the winner in Ndivisi Ward, but his name did not appear in the Gazette notice. Instead, Nalyanya Catherine Samini who lost was gazetted as the area MCA-elect.

The same is reflected in five other wards where Violet Namayemba, winner in Mihuu Ward, has been substituted with Kwoba Hezron Hillary.

The declaration of Jack Kawa and Milliah Masungo as the winners of Sitikho and Misikhu Wards was countered when their names were substituted with Patrick Lwiki and Barasa Simiyu respectively.

In a statement issued to The Standard, the Bungoma County ODM Chairman expressed his disappointment over the anomalies blaming the electoral officials who facilitated the gazettement.

"I am shocked that IEBC can have such glaring errors. We need to be told how this happened and the mistake should be rectified immediately. Someone who was number four cannot be declared a winner in the Gazette notice," he stated.

Another MCA-elect also questioned the credibility of the electoral body indicating that the error seen in the gazettement could be a reflection of the whole election process.

"Such small matters dent the credibility of the elections agency," added the MCA-elect who said he would travel to Nairobi to seek an audience with election officials.

The special Gazette notice released also excluded Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah who was elected unopposed.
