Kenyatta University Disowns Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja's Degree, Diploma

Kenyatta University has disowned Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja's claims that he schooled at the institution.

According to Samboja, he holds a Human Resource Management degree from KU which he was awarded in 2009.

Before receiving his degree, the governor claims that in 2002 he enrolled for a certificate course in KU (under the distant learning programme) before pursuing a diploma at the same University in 2003.

Kenyatta University has, however, disowned the Governor's sentiments through a letter signed by acting vice chancellor Prof Paul Wainana.

"This is to inform you that there are no records in the university to indicate that Granton Samboja of ID number 1254***1 was a student of Kenyatta University and graduated with a Bachelors degree in 2009," part of the letter read.

The institution wrote the letter as a response to an enquiry by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) regarding the governor's academic certificate.

“From the above, therefore, Mr Granton Graham Samboja was not a student of Kenyatta University during the period referred in your letter,” it stated.

Mr Samboja, however, insisted that he studied at Kenyatta University before he was employed as a director at a media firm associated with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), however, accepted his certificate and he was put on the ballot to vie for the governor's seat.

The NASA politician has, however, defended himself faulting the EACC for pursuing a case against him, yet it cleared him while he was seeking the gubernatorial seat.

He further mentioned IEBC, the Kenya Police and Kenya Revenue Authority as other bodies that cleared him.

A week ago, a voter identified as Armstrong Kiwoi went to court to stop Samboja's his swearing in but justice Eric Ogola of Mombasa Court rejected his application arguing that the court had no legal power to stop the inauguration.

Kiwoi wanted the court to declare the election of Samboja as Taita Taveta Governor illegal because he did not meet the educational standards as prescribed in the Constitution.

The Kenyan Constitution stipulates that holders of all elective posts must hold a  bachelors degree from a recognized institution.

Last month, EACC asked the High Court to disqualify Samboja on the grounds of forgery.
