Garissa Town MP-elect Aden Duale has confirmed that Members of Parliament (MPs) are ready for the outcome of the Presidential election petition including an eventuality where President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win would be overturned, and the country forced to go back to the polls.
Addressing the media at Parliament buildings on Friday, Mr Duale disclosed that should Raila Odinga win the petition, parliament would be called upon to allocate funding for the IEBC to conduct a re-run election.
“The parliamentary budget committee must be constituted where they will do supplementary estimates to rearrange funding for the IEBC to conduct a rerun,” he explained.
This, he expounded would only be possible after the members of the National Assembly have been sworn in.
He warned NASA legislators who had declared that they would boycott the swearing-in ceremony that they would be doing so at their own peril.
"All elected MPs will not have the ability to represent their people to legislate and oversight until they are sworn in.
" An MP-elect unless sworn in does not enjoy the benefits and privileges that accrue to such as a member. The member cannot access the assigned functions and authority," Mr Duale stated.
On Wednesday, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator-elect Kipchumba Murkomen revealed the Jubilee Party’s plan to counter NASA's move to boycott the swearing-in ceremony that is scheduled to take place on Thursday next week.
The Senator-elect disclosed that Jubilee legislators would go on with the ceremony as planned.
