Former President Mwai Kibaki Replaces Peter Munya as PNU Leader

Former Meru Governor Peter Munya has suffered another major blow after the Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung'u gazetted former President Mwai Kibaki as PNU leader ending Munya's controversial stint at the helm of the party.

Through a gazette notice released on Friday, the Registrar replaced Mr Munya and seven other PNU leaders as the officials of the party.

Munya was elected PNU chairman last year during a PNU National Delegates Convection at the Bomas of Kenya auditorium.

The delegates enthroned him as their party leader after he had launched his 2022 presidential campaign journey.

Besides party leader election, the delegates selected ten other officials who were meant to fully support Mr Munya's 2022 presidential bid.

The election of the former Governor was, however, disputed by a section of officials especially after the Political Parties Dispute Resolution Tribunal nullified the dissolution of PNU.

Nonetheless, Mr Munya and the other new officials were gazetted in April, six months after their election.

Regarding the replacement of PNU officials, Ms Ndung'u stated that the judgment to replace them followed a ruling by the Political Dispute Tribunal delivered on June 20, 2017.

The judgment indicated that “the officials of the interested party in office as at 27th October 2016 remain the bona fide office bearers of the concerned party until a proper general meeting is held to elect national officials".

The notice further read: "Any person with written submissions concerning the intended changes by the political party shall within seven days deposit them with the Registrar of Political Parties.”
