Kenya Magistrate Association Condemns Uhuru Kenyatta's Attack on Judiciary

The Kenya Magistrate and Judges Association has condemned President Uhuru Kenyatta's attacks and threats to the Supreme Court and Chief Justice David Maraga.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Association also warned the political class against personal profiling of Judicial officers who engaged in the Supreme Court verdict that nullified Kenyatta's win.

The same was reiterated by the Law Society of Kenya which censured the President for his continued remarks against the Judiciary.

Through its head Isaac Okero, LSK observed that Kenyatta's remarks were inappropriate and unfortunate.

"Ominously declaring that they (judges) should wait for him after he is successful in the coming fresh election is unfortunate and a wholly inappropriate remark from the Head of State who under the Constitution is a symbol of national unity, enjoys immunity from criminal and civil proceedings and must promote and enhance the unity of the nation," Okero stated.

Regarding the verdict, the magistrates applauded the Supreme Court of Kenya for delivering on its mandate within the stipulated time despite the possible challenges.

The board also expressed contentment with the court for being independent and resilient despite the bulky pleadings, evidence, and submissions they had to analyse.

During his first campaign tour after the ruling, Mr Kenyatta criticised Maraga and the Supreme Court for nullifying his re-election.

"Before the Supreme Court ruling, I was the president-elect, but Maraga and his team have declared the election as null and void...I am the incumbent President with full powers. Maraga should know he is dealing with a sitting President." he stated.

During a press conference held on Saturday morning, Mr Kenyatta also condemned the Judiciary for issuing a ruling against his presidency.

"The Supreme Court sat and decided that they are the ones with bigger power than the 15 million Kenyans who vote for their preferred presidential candidates. As a Supreme Court, they cannot annul the wishes of the people," he stated

On Friday, the Court issued a verdict that invalidated the presidential results of the August polls and ordered for fresh elections within 60 days.
