Court Stops Swearing-in of Nominated MCAs to Murang’a County Assembly

A Murang’a Court has issued an order barring the swearing-in of MCAs nominated to the Murang’a County Assembly.

This is after Gatanga MP Joseph Nduati and candidates Mary Mbula and Hellen Ndiko filed a petition asking the court to declare the nominations unconstitutional.

Through their Lawyer Jessica Pekke, the petitioners claimed that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) illegally omitted the names of Mbula and Ndiko from the nomination list.

The petition also indicates that the Jubilee Party failed to include the two in the Gazette notice published last Tuesday.

Their names were allegedly replaced by Stephen Chege, Ruth Wambui, Alex Makau and Catherine Wanjiku.

Principal Magistrate Anthony Mwichigi gave orders for a copy of the petition to be filed with the Judiciary Committee on elections immediately, pending an inter-parties hearing that will be held on September 12.

The swearing in of MCAs across the country is scheduled to take place on Monday.

Meanwhile, only five out of the 11 people who applied for the position of the speaker in the Murang'a County Assembly have been cleared.
