IEBC Announces New Election Campaign Period

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday announced the official campaign period for the October 17 presidential election.

In a gazette notice, the Commission stated that the campaigns will kick off on Wednesday, September 6 and end on Sunday, October 15.

"The campaign period for the purpose of the October 17th election shall commence on 6th September 2017 and cease on October 15th, 2017 being 48 hours before the election day.

“The Campaign time shall run from 7.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. during the campaign period,” the commission stated.

Regarding the appointment of agents, IEBC announced that all political parties and candidates should appoint and submit to the Commission names of national, County and constituency Chief Agents to the polls body on or before 2nd October 2017.

The Commission further announced that all polling stations shall remain as gazetted by IEBC on June 30th, 2017.

Meanwhile, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati appointed a project team for the repeat Presidential polls, sidelining embattled CEO Ezra Chiloba and six other senior officials. 

Issuing a statement on Tuesday evening, Chebukati, who is the National Returning Officer, made the changes that would take place immediately and will last for a period of three months.

"I wish to assure all Kenyans of my commitment to ensure that this fresh presidential election is done in accordance with the Constitution, the relevant laws and that it reflects the sovereign will of the Kenyan people," he proclaimed.

The new appointees announced are:

Project coordinator: Mr Marjan Hussein Marjan

Head of Operations: Dr Sidney Namulungu

Head of Logistics: Ms Nancy Kariuki

Head of Training: Mr Bernard Misati Moseti

Head of ICT: Mr Albert Gogo who will be under the direct supervision of the national returning officer

Head of National Tallying Center: Mr Silas Rotich

The repeat Presidential election is set for October 17 where President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition Leader Raila Odinga are expected to face off.
