The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday night made a new announcement after President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party rejected the election team constituted for the October elections.
In a letter to Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati noted that the Commission is an independent body and as such it cannot be directed by political parties or individuals on how to handle its matters.
"Please note that the Commission is an independent constitutional body, which as per Article 249 of the Constitution shall not be subject to direction or control by any person or authority.
“It is therefore unacceptable for you to provide a list of staff that you direct should not be members of the project team,” Chebukati's letter read in part.
The Chair called on Jubilee and NASA to respect the constitution and invited the parties leadership for a meeting today to discuss pertinent issues regarding the Presidential elections.
IEBC made the statement after Jubilee rejected the new team that was expected to take charge of the Presidential election.
In a letter, the party acknowledged that it respected the polls body and the challenges it was facing but it disagreed with the list that was put forward.
"We have noted that you have established a project team...we also appreciate the difficult situation you find yourself but we have received credible information that in the list are people known to be partisan," read part of the statement.
The document had the names of staff members the party had an issue with and included:
1. Marijan Hussein Marijan 5. Joseph Ayatta
2. Salome Oyugi 6. Joyce Ekuam
3. Decimah Mmayi 7. Limus Onyango
4. Chrispine Owiye 8. Caroline Manyange
"Given the fact that acts of omission or commission that rendered the elections null and void originated from the IEBC staff.
"We hereby register our strong objection to the deployment of the above to be in a position to run the process," it read.
