Government Spokesperson Eric Kiraithe Issues New Statement Regarding Supreme Court Verdict

The government has asked the Supreme Court to immediately provide simple, factual and logical information on the evidence and the various criteria used in nullifying the presidential election.

Addressing the press on Wednesday at his offices, Government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe noted that the general public should not wait for the 21 days promised by the court to get the full judgement.

Instead, he urged the court to provide its ruling in a simple language Kenyans can understand regarding the evidence and various grounds on which the verdict was reached.

The government spokesperson, however, indicated that: “We are not referring to the full judgment couched in legal terms expected within 21 days but simple and logical information digested for consumption by the ordinary citizens.”

Defending his remarks, Mr Kiraithe stated that the move by the court to nullify the presidential results was a matter of public interest as it sparked tension and uncertainty among Kenyans.

He pointed out that failure to explain to Kenyans the verdict in simple terms could elicit heated reactions from various blocks of the political divide.

Last week, The Supreme Court nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta's re election ordering for a fresh poll which has been set for October 17th.

While releasing the verdict, Chief Justice David Maraga apologised to Kenyans for not coming up with the full judgement for NASA's presidential petition.

Mr Maraga, therefore, indicated that due to the stipulated Constitutional timelines, the court could only summarize their ruling and provide the full judgement in 21 days.

"Given the tonnes of materials placed before us, it was not humanly possible to go through them and write a reasoned and well-considered judgment. If we don't deliver a judgment today we will have a crisis," he noted.
