Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar Files Petition Challenging Governor Hassan Joho's Victory

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho could lose his governorship if a petition filed challenging his win in the August 8 election is successful.

Former area Senator Hassan Omar on Friday filed the petition at the High Court claiming that Joho was not properly re-elected as Mombasa Governor.

Speaking during a press conference in Mombasa, Mr Omar stated that there was massive tampering of election results in the county during the concluded polls.

The ex-Senator, who last week resigned from his position as Secretary General of Wiper Party, noted he had been collecting evidence from various sources over the past weeks and was now ready to challenge Joho's win.

He alleged that National Super Alliance (NASA) IT experts were among the first to inform him of massive election fraud immediately after the August polls.

Omar stated that the petition was not about the majority of Mombasa residents who voted for the Governor, but the integrity of future elections in the county.

He also mentioned that among the issues raised in his case was the abuse of public resources, use of state officers in campaigns and Governor Joho's academic qualifications.

Joho won the gubernatorial contest with over 220,000 votes, while the former Senator came in third after Jubilee's Suleiman Shabhal. He garnered just over 44,000 votes.

Omar further accused the NASA leadership, specifically Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka, of supporting and condoning unethical acts by the incumbent Governor during the electioneering period.

Since he made his move to ditch Wiper, it has remained unclear whether he will be joining the Jubilee camp as some of his former party members led by David Musila have recently done.

His petition is the latest in a long list filed by disgruntled politicians who lost in the past election across the country.
