Embakasi West MP George Theuri Shamed for Building Swimming Pool for School with Poor Classrooms

Embakasi West MP George Theuri has come under criticism from residents of Nairobi's Umoja Estate after he constructed a swimming pool at a primary school in the area.

A section of parents took to social media to express their displeasure with the dilapidated conditions their children were studying in and the deplorable state of some of the classrooms.

One parent claimed it was a shame for pupils to sit on three-legged chairs in classrooms overlooking an idle pool that is open to the public only on weekends.

The pool was officially opened earlier this year but parents at Umoja Primary School are far from pleased, saying some of the funds used in that project should have been used.

"Imagine the kind of chairs and desks class 7 kids are sitting on...two-legged, three-legged and jerricans. Let us help our kids," posted one parent in a Facebook group.

Residents and parents in the group claimed it was down to the negligence of the school's head but also questioned why Theuri had not intervened despite numerous complaints.

In August, Theuri made headlines when he showed up at State House in sandals.

When asked why he attended an official function in sandals, the MP stated that he felt 'comfortable and relaxed'.

"...being a weekend, it was just like my house. Besides, the meeting was informal, not official," said Theuri.

He further stated that President Uhuru Kenyatta was not bothered by his outfit.

Theuri was part of Jubilee leaders who had been invited by the President to State House prior to the nullification of the Presidential election and he even made a speech during the function.

Asked whether he was taking over the 'bad-boy look' from Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, Theuri was quick to say open shoes are his trademark and he was not looking for any bad-boy title.
