MPs Warned on International Spies Among Them

Members of Kenya's 12th Parliament have been cautioned against involvement with international spies masquerading as diplomats from foreign States.

National Intelligence Service (NIS) Assistant Director Alexander Muteshi told the MPs to exercise caution while dealing with foreign diplomats as some are on an espionage mission.

"Be very careful what you share with diplomats, they are intelligence officers," Mr Muteshi stated.

The Intelligence Chief spoke during an induction workshop organised for the MPs at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi.

The MPs were urged to protect national security by safeguarding the country's secrets.

Following new regulations instituted by the ICT Ministry, sharing government passwords or any other form of access to the government's cyberinfrastructure to foreigners has been classified as cyber espionage.

The crime is punishable by between three to 20 years in jail and up to Sh25 Million as fine.

Muteshi took the MPs through more information on elements that are a threat to national security, classifying terrorism as the number one threat.

The MPs will be hosted at the workshops for the rest of the week and the training sessions will end in a formal dinner alongside their spouses on Friday.
