Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced that hawkers will be moved back to the streets as the County Government looks for a place to permanently place them.
The governor added that he had directed Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe to sit with the Director of Trade and find a place for hawkers who are now being referred to as small-scale traders.
Sonko said he was trying to identify streets where hawkers can be accommodated as plans are put in place to set up stalls.
"We will not chase you from the city centre...we will look for places to take you first.
"This is where my votes came from. I started fighting for hawkers when I was Makadara MP. I will not change now that I am governor," stated Sonko over the weekend.
Last week, Governor Sonko suspended a ban on matatus accessing the CBD.
According to Sonko, the order that was a pilot project that would ensure school going children and people going to work would be dropped in the CBD without affecting the flow of traffic.
Sonko made the move after concerns by the operators during a consultation meeting at City Hall last Monday.
As a temporary measure to address the traffic menace, the governor directed that there shall be strictly no double parking, no obstruction, no unnecessary U-turns, no noise pollution in CBD and no blocking of business premises.
