Kenyan Chief Justice David Maraga on Monday attended the opening of the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
During his introduction, Maraga was greeted by a loud cheer from participants who were delighted to have him grace the occasion.
Tanzania's Chief Justice Ibrahim Juma made a special mention of the Kenyan CJ and lauded his efforts of safeguarding the Constitution.
"We are deeply honoured by your presence - Hon Chief Justice Maraga," said Judge Juma.
Maraga, however, declined to give an interview to journalists, opting to remain low-key during the conference.
In one of the boldest decisions on the continent, Justice Maraga annulled the last Presidential election on grounds that the poll process was massively flawed by illegalities and irregularities. This move earned Maraga criticism and praise in equal measure.
Members of the Jubilee Party have accused him of robbing President Uhuru Kenyatta of clear victory and some even suggested that his judgement was biased.
The Head of State has also constantly demanded answers from the CJ as to why he cancelled the election but Maraga has remained firm that the process was not done in line with the Constitution and relevant electoral laws.
The president initially said he would accept the Supreme Court's ruling, although he did question why "4 people [the judges] decided to go against the will of the people".
