NASA Leader Raila Odinga Makes New Announcement After the Re-arrest of Babu Owino

Opposition Leader Raila Odinga on Wednesday evening condemned the re-arrest of Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino shortly after he was released on a Sh500,000 bond.

In a statement, Mr Odinga stated that the coalition was deeply disturbed about the decision to re-arrest the legislator.

"We are concerned that the State is resorting to persecution, banditry and torture tactics where application and observation of the rule of law would suffice," Odinga's statement read in part.

The former Prime Minister noted that there was no reason to re-arrest the young MP adding that if the Government had more charges against Mr Owino they should have merged them together and submit it as one case.

"There is no justification whatsoever why the state did not consolidate its cases against Babu Owino and present them in Court once.

"The re-arrest of the MP is an act of intimidation of Legislators with a view of having them toe the line of the Executive," he stated.

On Wednesday, the former University of Nairobi Student Leader was dramatically re-arrested after the High Court released him on bail.

The newly-elected legislator had been released on a Sh500,000 bail and two sureties of Sh1 Million each.

He had just posted his bail at the Milimani Law Courts when police officers apprehended him, led him into a waiting vehicle and sped away.

Police revealed that the legislator was arrested in connection to a past assault case adding that he would be arraigned in court to answer to the charges in court on Thursday.
