Nyanza NASA MPs Cancel Presidential Campaigns

National Super Alliance (NASA) MPs from Nyanza region have cancelled presidential campaigns to press for electoral reforms ahead of the repeat poll scheduled for October 26.

MPs Jared Okello (Nyando), Fred Ouda (Kisumu Central), Aduma Owuor (Nyakach), Paul Abuor (Rongo) and Samwel Atandi (Alego Usonga) announced that they would not relent until their demands are met.

Okello and Ouda stated that they would not participate in the fresh presidential poll if the calls by NASA to amend flawed sections of the law were not observed.

The legislators argued that without amendments to key electoral reforms, it would be a waste of time to go back to the ballot.

The MPs declared that they would push for equitable amendments of laws that do not favour one side of the political divide.

This came following the move by Jubilee Party lawmakers to attempt to use their numerical strength in Parliament to change the election laws.

The MPS announced that they would introduce radical electoral amendments that would make it impossible for the Supreme Court to annul a presidential election

In their interpretation of Section 82 of the Elections Act, the Jubilee leaders stated that an election would only be nullified if a petitioner is able to prove the conduct of the election substantially violated the principles laid down in the Constitution and other written laws.

They further stated that an election would be annulled if it was fraught with irregularities or illegalities that affected the result.

The legislators also seek to introduce what they term a complementary mechanism to electronic transmission of results.
