Former Politician and His Wife Killed

Former North West Kisumu ward representative Stephen Otiato and his wife Roselyne Akinyi were on Tuesday electrocuted in their home in Maseno,Kisumu County.

The former councillor died while trying to save his wife who had touched a clothes line which was in contact with an open electric wire.

One of the deceaseds' children Evelyne Nyawira confirmed the incident noting: “We were asleep and we heard mummy crying behind the house where we hang our clothes. Daddy came out first when I went to check, they were all down and not talking.”

Evelyne stated that she did not touch the bodies but instead called for help.

According to Kisumu office Kenya Power supervisor, Mr Aggrey Kibande, the live open wire was a case of poor wiring.

He exempted the family from the fault indicating that they had a certificate which proved that input of electric wire was complete.

“We are going to do our investigation to find out whoever did the wiring, from the look of things, there were several loose connections,” Mr Kibande stated.

He warned area residents against hiring non qualified electricians adding that several electrocution cases had been reported due to poor wiring.

"Most of those who die are house helps because they get into contact with live wires while performing house chores,” he noted.

Mr Otiato was the councillor from 2006 to 2012 until he lost to Samuel Baker Otieno Ombogo in 2013.
