The Move President Uhuru Kenyatta is Expected to Make

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to assent to the Election Offences Amendment Bill and the Elections Laws Amendment Bill.

The Senate has approved the amendments without making changes to the two Bills setting the stage for the assent.

The electoral laws are expected to be given the go-ahead after a Special Senate Committee finalized its public hearing.

Senate was forced to form a special committee to handle the electoral laws in order to avoid any legal problems that could threaten the constitutionality of the legislation of the Bills in the Senate.

The Chair, Fatuma Dullo, stated that the Senate had to meet to listen the members of the public's opinions even though a joint parliamentary committee had gone through the same process.

“This is a new Bill for the Senate because the amendments have been incorporated and we are supposed to follow the procedure and open it to the public to see if there are more views,” Dullo stated.

Media Owners and the Media Council of Kenya, who were expected to show up before the committee, did not appear for the hearings.

The submissions the Committee received will help it prepare a report which will be tabled in the House.

“We have spoken to several institutions and most of them submitted their written memorandums.

We have gathered enough views and this afternoon we will be tabling a detailed report in the House on the same,” Dullo affirmed.
