IEBC's Commissioner Akombe Speaks on Resigning

IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe has refuted claims that she is resigning from the electoral body ahead of the fresh presidential election.

On Thursday, Akombe told the Star on phone that she would make sure the Commission delivers its mandate to Kenyans affirming that she had no plans of stepping down ahead of the presidential poll.

"As you can see I am talking to you. I am giving the plan on what is happening. Do I look like a person contemplating to resign?" she posed.

Ms Akombe and IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati were rumoured to be planning to submit their resignation letters following the wrangles within the election body.

The two are alleged to be tired of the current political standoff in the country, which might compromise the October 26 repeat poll.

However, She dismissed the claims calling them mere rumours that are aimed at creating unnecessary anxiety.

The Commissioner, who is also a US citizen, has been faced with various accusations over time.

Last month, Akombe was detained at the JKIA after she was allegedly suspected of planning to flee the country after the Supreme Court nullified the August 8 election.

She had failed to adhere to travel protocol that is required for holders of diplomatic passports.

Ms Akombe refuted these claims and accused the media of blowing the situation out of context.

The commissioner was also accused of meeting with a lawyer that represented President Uhuru Kenyatta after a picture was widely shared on social media.
