Government to Allow NASA Protests on Two Conditions

The government through City County Police Commander Japheth Koome has announced that the National Super Alliance (NASA) anti-IEBC demos will be allowed on only two conditions.

In a letter seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Koome told NASA CEO Norman Magaya that demos in the CBD will be allowed only after;

1. They notify the Local Officer Commanding Police Station (OCS) at least three days but not more than fourteen days before the proposed date of such proposed public meeting or procession.

2. Putting the notice in the prescribed form by specifying their full names and physical address as the organiser of such procession, the proposed route in the cause of such public procession among others.

Koome acknowledged receiving NASA's request to hold protests from Monday 16 to Saturday 21 October but remained adamant that legal action would be taken against them if they took to the streets without satisfying the set rules.

"Note that legal action will be taken against you as stipulated by the law if you contravene such legal provisions by organising any public meeting.

"...the procession you have organised for today (Friday) within the city of Nairobi is not allowed accordingly," read the letter.

Leaders allied to NASA in Mombasa County were on Friday teargassed by police as they were gathering to start anti-IEBC demos.

Mombasa Deputy Governor William Kingi, Senator Mohammed Faki and Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir were dispersed together with their supporters as they converged at Uhuru Gardens along Moi Avenue in the coastal city.

Police had swarmed the city's streets prior to the protests, ready to implement the government's order on demos.

The leaders vowed not to relent in their quest for justice and bashed the government for infringing upon their democratic right to picket.
